Jaisalmer district is situated in north western India in the state of Rajasthan. The historic city of Jaisalmer is the administrative headquarters of the district. Jaisalmer town was founded in the year 1156 AD by Maharawal Jaisal. The princely state of Jaisalmer became part of independent India in 1947. Later in 1949, it merged into Rajasthan and became a district in the Jodhpur division on October 6, 1949.
